Far, far out on my memory horizon, tiny and evanescent, is the feeling of what life was like before the internet took over. Despite having ostensibly grown up during an age when it was not possible to instantly acquire and share thoughts and information with a few pokes at my keyboard, the ability to do so is now such a critical organ of my life that in trying to recall that former period, I might just as well be attempting to personally remember the Black Plague: I know of it, but it’s difficult to mentally wind back the reel of time and deposit myself into that world.
Consider the drastic changes in the way we carry on our collective dialogue. It used to be that the public discourse was carried on primarily by journalists and public figures in print, radio and television, and the voice of the individual echoed only in local meeting places, or in the occasional letter to the editor. Today, everyone may share his or her thoughts on a vast public stage, freely and anonymously. Each plotted point in the graph of our civilization is now enriched, not just by so-called “experts”, but by the wisdom and erudition of the common person.
What if we had somehow enjoyed this power sooner? Think of how the defining moments of years gone by could have been illuminated by the down-to-earth wisdom of the average guy on the street! What might this have looked like?

Tensions continued to mount in the emerging crisis in the Caribbean, as the White House yesterday received a letter from Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev declaring his refusal to divert seven cargo vessels bound for Cuba. The ships, which have not stopped or diverted course, are believed to carry missiles intended for installation in that country. In a televised address on Monday, President Kennedy told the nation that definitive evidence had been obtained that missile sites are being constructed on Cuban soil, most with the capability of striking the U.S. mainland, and that the United States would act by any means necessary to prevent the spread of Communism in the western hemisphere. He announced a blockade of Cuba meant to prevent further deliveries of supplies from the Soviet Union, and a showdown with the Soviet Union seems imminent.
